Microgrids are revolutionizing the future of Solar + Storage, offering self-sufficiency and reliability. We frequently hear from EPCs, developers, and stakeholders asking, "What is a Microgrid System?" Power Engineering PM Mike Gotthardt explains the fundamental benefits behind a Microgrid System for Solar + BESS projects.

What is a Microgrid? An electrical system that has the ability to be self-sufficient and isolated from the utility. You are your own electric grid, essentially. So it takes distributed energy resources such as solar. Such as wind. Such as battery storage. It takes those components, resources that we see in grid type mode all the time. But it as the additional layer of operational self-sufficiency and the ability for the customer to be island ID from the utility and operate independently.
The biggest key is resiliency. It's saying another way to look at energy independence. It protects the customer from loss of power from the utility grid. If there is a loss of power to be able to keep your operations running smoothly, not to have blips in your manufacturing or industrial processes when it comes to microgrids, they they provide some of the greatest resiliency for a renewable energy system that we've seen to date.
