U.S. commercial PV systems are grid-tied, allowing them to export excess power to the utility grid. Before a PV system can interact with the utility grid, the system needs to go through an interconnection review process by the local utility to verify compliance with technical and administrative requirements.
Energy storage systems, with or without being combined with a PV system, also are required to go through an interconnection review process. Since energy storage systems often have complex utility imposed metering requirements and non-export interconnections these interconnection reviews can be more challenging than ones for PV only interconnections.
